"Detox" is one of the most abused words in the supplement industry. Let's be specific about what sea moss actually does — because the real mechanisms are more interesting than the vague marketing claims.
How the Body Actually Detoxifies
The liver handles two-phase detoxification. Phase I: cytochrome P450 enzymes (iron-dependent) oxidize fat-soluble toxins, making them reactive intermediates. Phase II: conjugation enzymes attach glutathione, sulfate, or glucuronic acid to those intermediates, making them water-soluble for excretion through bile or urine. The kidneys then filter water-soluble waste from blood. The gut prevents reabsorption of bile-conjugated toxins. "Detox" means supporting these specific systems — not metaphorical "cleansing."
Fucoidan and Heavy Metal Binding
Fucoidan's sulfate groups carry a strong negative charge. Heavy metal ions — lead (Pb²⁺), cadmium (Cd²⁺), mercury (Hg²⁺) — carry positive charges. The electrostatic attraction between them is real chemistry. Animal studies show fucoidan reduces tissue accumulation of lead and cadmium when administered concurrently with exposure. In vitro studies show fucoidan binds mercury with measurable affinity. This is a legitimate chelation-like mechanism. The important distinction from pharmaceutical chelation: fucoidan doesn't pull metals stored in bone, brain, or organs — it primarily acts on metals in the GI tract and circulation. For significant heavy metal toxicity, pharmaceutical chelation under medical supervision (DMSA, EDTA) remains the standard of care.
Soluble Fiber and Bile Toxin Excretion
The liver conjugates fat-soluble toxins with bile acids and secretes them into the small intestine. Normally, these bile acids are reabsorbed in the ileum — recycled back to the liver along with any still-bound toxins. This is enterohepatic recirculation. Soluble fiber physically traps bile acids (and their bound toxins) before they can be reabsorbed, forcing excretion in stool. This is the same mechanism that lowers LDL cholesterol — and it's a genuine dietary detoxification pathway. Sea moss's carrageenan and fucoidan polysaccharides contribute to this mechanism.
